INSIGHT

The Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) study is a collaboration between Penn State Hershey Medical Center and CCOR. The study tested an intervention program designed to provide developmentally appropriate guidance to parents of infants on responsive parenting and healthy lifestyle to see if that intervention will prevent rapid weight gain in infancy and overweight at age 3 years. An observational follow-up study followed participants through 9 years of age to see if the intervention continued to work into middle childhood.

Project Goals:

The goals of the first INSIGHT funding cycle were:

  1. To test the efficacy of an intervention designed to prevent rapid weight gain in infancy and overweight at age 3 years by providing guidance on responsive feeding, division of feeding responsibility, and healthy dietary choices.
  2. To determine if the intervention improves parents’ use of responsive feeding and parenting practices, and if intervention infants have longer sleep, fewer daily feedings, and healthier diets compared to control infants; and to determine if these outcomes are linked to healthier patterns of weight gain from birth to age 3 and lower BMI percentiles at age 3 years.

The goals of the INSIGHT continuation study were:

  1. To test the long-term effects of the responsive parenting intervention on child growth and weight status from age 3 to 9 years.
  2. To test the sustained effects of the responsive parenting intervention on parenting and child behavior related to obesity risk, including self-regulation of eating behavior, sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behavior at 6 and 9 years.
